Free film screenings at Birkbeck Cinema

This month at Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) there is a wide range of exciting and informative screenings and talks all of which are free! Find the whole programme below:
Fri 7 October: Andy Holden: Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape
The first event see’s artist Andy Holden present his new film Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape. The film is compiled of 100’s of clips taken from popular cartoons and explores the rules and laws from the Looney Tunes universe. Following the film Andy will be in conversation with Dr. Esther Leslie.

Sat 8 October: Adrian Martin + Cristina Álvarez López: The Audiovisual Essay
On the Saturday the ever expanding field of audio-visual film criticism is explored through the work of Adrian Martin + Cristina Álvarez López who will both be present at the screening with academic and practitioner Catherine Grant.

Fri 14 October: University of Pittsburgh Annual Lecture with Professor Adam Lowenstein: “A Detroit Landscape with Figures: The Subtractive Horror of It Follows”
The following week see’s renowned genre film expert Dr. Adam Lowenstein gives a lecture entitled ‘A Detroit Landscape with Figures: The Subtractive Horror of It Follows’, which explores the links between the critically acclaimed film with the space on inner city Detroit.

Sat 15 October: Faith Matters presents: Amar Akbar Anthony
Next is a slight change of pace, as the charity Faith Matters presents the highly regarded Hindi film Amar Akbar Anthony, a story of three brothers who belong to three very different faiths Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.

21 October &22 October: Cinephilia, Cinema-Going and Collecting: Cinemania & Screening Day
The next events at BIMI coincide with a free exhibition in the neighbouring exhibition the Peltz Gallery entitled A Museum of the Everyday: Cinephilia and Collecting. The exhibition celebrates the act of collecting objects related to cinema going and presents a small display of strange and peculiar objects lent from the famous Cinema Museum in Elephant and Castle. In the cinema there is a two day programme of films and documentaries continue this theme, starting with Cinemania a portrait of a group of New York obsessive cinemagoers known as The Regulars, who design intricate daily schedules in order to continue their habit of taking in between two to five films a day. After the film all guests are invited into the exhibition for a free wine reception. The second day focuses on a programme of short films and ends with a documentary on the famed founder of the Cinematheque Francais Henri Langlois.

22 October: Cinephilia, Cinema-Going and Collecting: Screening Day
28 October: Sci/Film Halloween Special: Animal Intelligence – The Birds (Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1963, 119min)
The final free film event in October is a special Halloween edition of Sci/Film a series which invites experts in fields of science to respond to films, and will be screening the Hitchcock classic The Birds!
