Art on the Underground

For all London Underground lovers

London Underground‘s associations with visual art began in 1908 and hopefully never stopped.. We’ve seen great artworks inside and outside the tube stations, as well as on posters and billboards. London Underground’s Art on the Underground (previously known as Platform for Art) was launched in 2000 and aimed to continue the company’s association with the arts and to provide a world-class programme of contemporary art that enriches the journeys of the passengers and the whole Tube environment.

There are several ongoing projects at the moment including temporary and permanent commissions.

  • Have a look at the cover of  the new Pocket Tube map that was designed by Sarah Morris and was released earlier this week.
  • Jacqueline Poncelet‘s new permanent artwork, ‘Wrapper’, made especially to clad the new building and perimeter wall next to Edgware Road Tube station.
  • Everything Meets Here’ a new large-scale pencil drawing at London Underground’s new building next to Edgware Road Tube stationby Jessie Brennan and developed with residents, students and London Underground staff.
