Barbican Weekender

Barbican Weekender Natural Circuits is a annual free public event that takes place at the Barbican Centre and celebrates the influence of digital technology on the arts, offering two packed days of workshops, performances and interactive installations for anyone eager to try something new.

Activity range from Claire Collison’s Tweet Poetry writing sessions to MZTeK’s Beatbox T-Shirt which gives participants the chance to hack circuits and design garments that make sounds at the touch of a fabric button.

There will be workshop sessions for families including Black Country Atelier’s 3D Printed Wildlife, where children can generate their own woodland animal shapes using 3D printing techniques, while budding musicians can create and add their own sound to an evolving piece of digital music with Off Modern’s Build a Band.

Other highlights of the Weekender include Hidden Fields / dance room spectroscopy , an installation that transforms people’s own physical energy fields into sounds and images as they dance; Dan Shorten’s IMPish BEHAVIOUR, premiers new interactive software for video mapping, which gives the illusion of the walls moving and the landscape shape shifting; and with YrWall, visitors can pick up a spray can and graffiti their own design on the digital canvas.

Visitors will also have the chance to take the mic in pop-up live talk show Talkeoke hosted by The People Speak or join in with If you cannot see our light, a mobile musical performance where participants become part of a walking orchestra carrying sound-speakers as they create enchanting sounds in the Barbican foyers – no musical ability required.
