Haroshi’s first solo exhibition at StolenSpace, ‘Pain’
post by Shea Georgina
There is a Japanese artistic sense in London’s air these days since at the British Museum you can see the exhibition “Sex and pleasure in Japanese art” (highly recommended), at the Old Truman Brewery: “Hokusai exposed” (competition soon to follow) and at the Stolen Space gallery, Haroshi’s exhibition “Pain”. But the latter will be my main focus.
Did you ever wonder what happens to skateboards after they die? (one of the exhibitions questions). I personally never did but it was a good surprise to find out. Haroshi gives life to broken skateboards by crafting them in sculptures that have as their main topic, what else? Pain! Skateboards that ended up in his hands probably after some painful experiences of their owners are transformed into a piece of art that expresses the artist’s emotional pain.
The wooden sculptures are so detailed and colorful that it really makes you wonder how the artist managed to get that result from just that material.
The exhibition will be displayed until the 3rd of November (Sunday) so hurry up!
