Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival 2016 - Broke in London

Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival 2016

Catch a free film during September

By Ann Lazim, PNFFF co-ordinator

The 7th Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival celebrating the variety of culture and communities in Peckham and Nunhead kicks off on September 1st and continues until the 11th, ending the summer holidays on a high. The PNFFF team is trusting there’ll be good weather as there are lots of outdoor screenings!

What’s On

The outside of the chapel in Nunhead Cemetery will be illuminated on the opening night with Storm Warning, a fantastic show combining light and sound.

The next two days will see events on Peckham Rye Common with keyboard virtuoso Neil Brand accompanying silent films and a bike-powered screening of Jumanji.

Electric Pedals join in again midweek for a collaboration with the new Peckham Festival to show Blues Brothers in Copeland Park. This event is followed by live music as is a screening of Janis: Little Girl Blue.

Other films featuring music include Purple Rain as a tribute to Prince and Get on Up about James Brown. A group of young Peckham people give their view of the grime music scene and the culture around it in That Side an event combining film and live performance.

On the second weekend there are screenings in Burgess Park of Romeo and Juliet and The Jungle Book.

Family Friendly Films

There are plenty of films for children and young people with screenings in community halls, a school and a special showing at Peckhamplex of the brilliant Studio Ghibli film My Neighbour Totoro. Peckhamplex is also the venue for the closing film, the world première of comedy Powder’s Peckham.

There’s a horror strand happening – one of those things that just emerges as the festival is never deliberately themed. The PNFFF Women in Film group is exploring ideas around this and classics The Wicker Man and Hellraiser can be seen elsewhere in the festival.

The Afrikans on Film Festival

For the 5th year running the Afrikans on Film Festival (formerly known as Welcome to Busseywood) takes place over three floors of the Bussey Building in the centre of Peckham. This unique and varied programme is a significant part of the festival.

And that’s not all! There are screenings in a waste management facility, a community garden and a garden centre. And films about suffragettes, a documentary and discussion about women comic creators, and Knitflix, a wittily titled programme of films about knitting. There’s lots more to explore! Head to freefilmfestivals.org for details.
