Did July sneak up on anyone else!? I feel as though I blinked and suddenly half the year was gone. Well- it looks like it’s going to be a hot one so in between hitting the lido and all of the amazing summer festivals, make sure you check out these free events across the capital. As always, some of my fellow BrokeinLondoners have some more ideas for you in the Free Entertainment in London section.
#1 Kapparberg Urban Forest | Until 12th July
It’s your last chance to check out the Scandi scene in East London. The fine folks at Kopparberg have transplanted a small Scandinavian forest into the wilds of Hackney Wick, bringing music, fun and fanfare with it. Entry is free to the Kopparberg Urban Forest but food and drink will cost you so eat at home and go for the concerts if you’re feeling a bit skint!
When: Until 12th July
Where: 37-41 Whitepost Lane, London E9 5EN
#2 Wimbledon Screens | Until 12th July
Summer means strawberries, Pimms and of course…WIMBLEDON! Whether you’re a tennis fan or not, London is full of cool places to hang out, watch the game and catch up with your mates. Check out Time Out’s list of Wimbledon screens to find the one closest to you. All of them are free and allow picnics!
When: Until 12th July
Where: Across London
#3 Independent Label Market | 11th July
If you love beer and vinyl then this market is for you! The usual traders will once again be making an appearance at the Independent Label Market and you can expect to find some gems. Once you get tired of browsing you can have a pint with London Brewer’s Market in their pop up beer garden next door!
When: 11th July
Where: Old Spitalfields Market, London EC1 6EW
#4 Carsten Nicolai Unicolor| All Month
According to TimeOut, it might be London’s greatest selfie moment this year- or at least the most instagrammable thing in the city. I think they say it better than I ever could so: “between the head rush of glitched-out audio and the intoxicating purity of light and colour, it’s a little like drifting through all the individual components of a rainbow. You’re just sat there in an infinity of colour. Who needs to taste the rainbow when you can be in it?”
When: All Month, Tues-Sat, 12pm-6pm
Where: Brewer Street Cark Park, 17 Peter St, London w1F 0AL
#5 Lambeth Country Show | 18th-19th July
It’s back! The Lambeth Country Show is your typical two-day country fair in the heart of Lambeth. Keep your eyes peeled for horticulture shows, animals, home-grown veg, music, crafts and more! It’s a wholesome good time with eclectic music: dub, ska, disco, afro-beat and soul. There’s nothing else like it and I promise you won’t get bored!
When: 18th-19th July, 12pm-8pm
Where: Brockwell Park, Dulwich Road, London SE24 0PA
#6 Camden Beach | From Friday 17th July
Can’t make it to the seaside and weren’t bothered about getting into the water anyways? Then Camden Beach is for you! Tonnes and tonnes of sand (150 to be exact), deckchairs and ping-pong- this beach has everything you need on a warm, sunny London summer day. If you feel like splurging you can book a beach hut for you and 7 friends…
When: From Friday 17th July
Where: The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Rd, London NW1 8EH
#7 Walthamstow Garden Party| 18th-19th July
It may be a bit farther east than some of you venture, but the Walthamstow Garden Party never disappoints. You can expect music, theatre, circus, spoken word, films, crafts and general awesome-ness. The festival is produced with the Barbican and Create so you can expect some high quality stuff – all for free!
When: 18th -19th July, 12pm-930pm Saturday, 12pm-8pm Sunday
Where: Lloyd Park, Hoe Street, London E17 3AP
#8 Waterloo Food Festival | All Month
I’ve never heard of this festival before, but it looks great! All month long there will be food and flavour related events across SE1. Some highlights: No Boot Car Boot, Family Fete and Classic Cars and a Vintage Market. You can find more about the Waterloo Food Festival on the We Are Waterloo website!
When: All Month
Where: Venues across SE1
#9 Summer Streets Culture Club | 26th July
Regent Street is shutting down to traffic every Sunday in July and the last Summer Streets Sunday of the month is devoted to culture. The University of Wesminster is exhibiting select fashion and music graduates, the Icebar London area has friendly Husky dogs for you to meet and the new Pink Floyd Heritage plaque is being unveiled.
When: 26th July
Where: Regent Street, London
#10 London’s Lidos | All Month
Last, but not least, a little reminder than London is full of lidos where you can beat the heat and get some of that Vitamin D. Summer doesn’t last forever so you should take advantage of it when you can! Expect to queue on particularly hot days- but it’s worth it!
When: All month, times vary
Where: Across London
