Global sounds for East London ears
On the Western stretch of Bethnal Green Road, connecting banker-infested hipster-ville and the gentler plains of Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath sits Rich Mix. Rich Mix is a charity and a social enterprise. It is also a well-loved East London venue with a diverse artistic programme incorporating film, performance, art, spoken word and comedy.
On Friday 13th March 2015, local arts and heritage charity Cultural Co-operation brings a rich programme of artists from around the world, for its first ‘A World in London’ (AWIL) gig, hosted by renowned global beat DJ Ritu.
What can we expect to hear?
‘A World in London’ boasts a moveable feast of melodies and rhythms:
- An amuse-bouche of tunes reminiscent of traditional Shanghai tea-houses from the complex silk and bamboo melodies of the SOAS Sizhu Ensemble
- A hearty serving of Greek and Balkan sounds from Kourelou– playing their unique blend of mainland folk with a contemporary twist
- A sizzling slice of rhythm and rollick from the Twa communities of the DRC: conscious Congo brought to life by Mulele Matondo Afrika
- Lashings of palate-cleansing entertainment throughout the evening by DJ Ritu including excerpts from her weekly A World in London (AWIL) radio shows. First broadcast on BBC London 94.9 in 2006, AWIL continues to showcase the most exciting global sounds in London across two Wednesday night platforms: new music reviews on SOAS Radio (16:00) and live music on Resonance FM (18.30) in conjunction with Cultural Co-operation and its Artist Network.
Complimentary Drinks and discounts
Keen to feed all senses, AWIL is also offering guests who sign up via Eventbrite a complimentary drink on arrival and 20% off the delicious Indian street food served at the Indi-Go Café. Guests need to pre-register and present their ticket when ordering.
