1000kisses for 1000 years in Southwark
Want to help break a world record in your lunch break? Of course you do. Head over to Borough Market on 16th December at 12.30pm for the festive ‘1000 kisses’ event. Set under a beautiful ceiling of individually wrapped pieces of mistletoe, Borough Market is attempting the world record for the most amount of simultaneous kisses under mistletoe. The event marks Borough’s 1000th Christmas in Southwark, one kiss for every year! The event is suitable for anyone and everyone. You are only required to cheek kiss, so bring your partner, friend, mother, colleague, or whoever you like!
For the first time ever, the energy generated from the kisses will power up Borough Market’s Christmas light display, made possible from the expert physicists at Royal Holloway, University of London. Participants will act as a circuit and switch on the lights as they ‘connect’ by sharing their special Christmas kiss. Academic David Farmer from Royal Holloway University has worked out that the total amount of calories burned by 1,000 one-second kisses converts into enough energy to power Borough’s Christmas display for 11 minutes.
For all the social media users out there, we are providing you with an opportunity to capture your memories of the day. All you have to do is take a photo of your mistletoe kiss on your phone, and share it on Twitter or Instagram under the hashtag #BOROUGHMARKET1000. All photos posted under the correct hashtag will be collated and available to print after the event on a touchscreen device at the market. A perfect Christmas present for your nearest and dearests’.
All participants will be treated to free mine pies and entertained with Christmas carols from the Royal Holloway, University of London choir. This is sure to be an event to remember.
