A holiday with Bankside’s Summer of Culture
One of the great things about going on holiday is the sense of adventure you get from discovering a new place. But going on an adventure doesn’t have to mean jetting off on a plane. A visit to London’s Bankside; weaving in and out of the Victorian railway arches and through the medieval cobbled streets feels like a journey through time. You can dodge the menaces of the Clink Street prison in the 12th century, immerse yourself in Elizabethan England at Shakespeare’s Globe or the Rose Playhouse and come back into the present and even into the future with a trip to the Tate Modern.
In honour of this rich heritage Bankside is hosting the free festival Summer of Culture, celebrating the area’s food, drink, music and art.
London Wine Week | 2nd– 8th June
The festivities kick off on 2nd June with London Wine Week, when 12 Bankside bars and restaurants will show off premium wines by the glass from around the world. Collect a wrist band from Laithwaite’s in Borough Market and enjoy wines at venues including The Table, Albion, Citizen M, Union Street Café and Vinopolis.
Bastille Day Festival | Sunday 13th July
On the 13th July, it will be easy to mistake Bankside for a Parisian dream as Borough Market and the surrounding area says ‘bonjour’ to our French neighbours with London’s biggest free Bastille Day celebration. There will be live music, street performances and delicious French food and drink for all. A great way to spend the day in France without leaving London!
Open Streets | 30th August
On Saturday 30th August, Bankside will welcome the world to take part in the global Open Streets movement. Southwark Street will be closed to traffic and open for pedestrian power! Expect a range of unique alfresco activities throughout the area.
Merge Festival | 18th September
Marking the finale of the Summer of Culture, Bankside will host the annual Merge Festival, which launches on 18th September. Merge is a month long immersive arts festival that will showcase installations, exhibitions and live performances in open air locations and unusual spaces throughout Bankside. Sounds awesome no?
