If you’re a culture enthusiast or simply looking for something unique to do without breaking the bank, mark your calendars for October! This autumn, Wales unveils its newest cultural treasure: Ffoto Cymru 2024. Running from October 1st to 31st, this biennial festival, delivered by Ffotogallery, promises to bring an impressive array of photographic art to venues across Cardiff, Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil, Penarth, Wrexham, Ruthin, and Carmarthen.
Spotlight on Female Photographers
Ffoto Cymru builds on the success of the Diffusion Festival, with a renewed focus on celebrating the contributions of women in photography. In a world where female artists are often underrepresented, Ffoto Cymru 2024 puts them front and center. With the intriguing theme “What You See is What You Get?”, the festival invites us to explore how images shape our identities and culture, from historical archives to the latest in AI technology.
Marian Delyth: A Retrospective
At the heart of the festival is a major retrospective of Marian Delyth’s work, “Darnau | Fragments,” on display at Ffotogallery in Cardiff. This exhibit traces 50 years of Delyth’s influential career, showcasing her powerful documentation of Welsh life, culture, and activism. From social justice to peace campaigns, Delyth’s lens has captured the essence of Wales and beyond, cementing her status as one of Wales’s most significant visual artists.
Emerging Talent and International Collaborations
Ffoto Cymru also shines a light on the future of photography with new works by emerging Welsh artists Ada Marino, Adéọlá, Holly Davey, and Jessie Edwards-Thomas. Additionally, the festival features a collaboration with the Foto Féminas network, bringing the works of Luiza Possamai Kons (Brazil), Julieta Anaut, and Lorena Marchetti (both from Argentina) to the UK for the first time.
Affordable Cultural Exploration
Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or just curious about the power of visual storytelling, Ffoto Cymru 2024 offers a fantastic opportunity to explore world-class art without spending a fortune. Many of the events and exhibitions are free or low-cost, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy.
