Free Balkan and Colombian folk gig at Southbank Centre
By Leah
As we stumble through December, nursing Westfield-induced headaches and RSI obtained from frantic late-night Internet shopping, Cultural Co-operation’s A World in London- Live! gig provides the perfect tonic. Following in the wake of two bustling concerts at Rich Mix and Southbank Centre earlier this year, this modest charity continues its successful partnership with renowned globalbeat DJ- DJ Ritu for A World in London- Live!: a day and night of sizzling seasonal fun.
Why not grab a bite in the Balkans?
On 18th December, Cultural Co-operation will return again to the Southbank Centre, which has invited Cultural Co-operation to take over its Friday ‘lunch and tonic’ supported by MasterCard. At lunchtime (1pm for the uninitiated) Balkan four-piece Valkania start off the show with a one-hour portion of their infectious, bouncy beats; both supple as a barynya dance and a hearty as a bowl of beetroot soup in midwinter.
Recharge by the river…
Crowds will then be dismissed until the evening sitting, so why not take a leisurely browse of the Southbank Festive Food Market? If the halloumi fries slathered over stall-holder @Oli_Baba’s Twitter page are anything to go by, you might want to perform a few laps around the market to offset the delicious dishes with some cautionary cardio.
…and rumba in Columbia!
Colombian 10-piece big-hitters Papayera, led by vocalist Angelica Lopez will be finishing off the evening, and kick-starting your festive season. With musical influences hailing from the Atlantic Coast, the group’s sound is a hot slice of hip-shakin’ havoc with enough vim and vigour to shift even the most recalcitrant Winter flu. Check your workplace troubles at the door, and dance in the weekend with one of the finest exponents of Columbian cumbia, vallenato, champeta and fandango in Europe!
