Feed Your Mind at the Inside Out Festival 2013
Ever pondered on such weird and wonderful questions as what the world would be like without failure, why jokes are funny, how maths and magic are related and what does being human mean? If these are the kinds of ideas that keep you awake at night then come and steal some free education at this year’s Inside Out Festival as London’s brightest minds attempt to tackle these questions!
Many Londoners may not think about the fact that behind the arts, creativity and science that makes London a world-class city, universities are working away behind the scenes, contributing a wealth of expertise, talent and knowledge. Now The Culture Capital Exchange has created a unique festival to celebrate their achievements in a way that will intrigue, inform, fascinate and, above all, entertain.
Taking place from Friday 18 to Sunday 27 October, the performances, workshops, film screenings, walks and concerts aim to turn topics on their heads, question certainties and inspire contemplation. Woven through the festival is a mini festival of failure, exploring the taboo topic of the role that failure plays in success, creativity and invention. There are 47 events spread across the week, the vast majority of which are free. It will also be an opportunity to sample some beautiful or unusual venues, such as Somerset House, the National Portrait Gallery, October Gallery, the Museum of Brands, a barge on The Cut or The Cally bridge.
- 18 October | There will be a typically raucous start to the festival on Friday with a Shout-Mob in the chapel of King’s College London on the Strand. (free)
- 21 October | Then be brave and share your tales of failure with comedian Helen Lederer, best known for her role as dippy Catriona in Absolutely Fabulous, and a panel of world-renowned academics. (free)
- 22 October | Investigate contemporary story-telling. (admission fee: £6)
- 23 October | Find out if Guinness was ever good for you at a just a sample of the events. (free)
- 24 October | See some amazing magic tricks and then uncover the maths and computing behind them with Professor Peter McOwan. (free)
- 24 October | Take part in a crime-writing workshop. (free)
- 25 October | Quiz the Academy-award winning screenwriter of Atonement and Dangerous Liaisons, Christopher Hampton, after a screening of his film The Secret Agent. (free)
