Do you live in the borough of Hackney, well shame on you, as it’s recently been labelled one of the worst boroughs in the country when it comes to recycling rubbish! In light of this, the London Borough of Hackney is now fighting back by offering incentives to it’s residents and looping in local businesses, so that you can earn discounts and prizes in return for recycling more of your rubbish. At the moment, the Hackney recycles less that 25% of it’s waste, but hopefully that’s all about to change. All 113,000 residences in the borough will be eligible for the scheme, whilst over 100 business will also be taking part by offering the discounts.

Here’s how it works: residents sign up and earn points when their neighbourhood (of the 21 in Hackney) produces less waste and recycles more. Individuals from those neighbourhoods who are picked out as recycling the most will also be offered vouchers as prizes. On top of all of that, every six months, a £7,500 donation will be made to a local community project. Eateries, barbers and galleries, including Anjelique, Pickles of London and Vintage Basement have all signed up to the scheme and are offering all sorts of discounts and offers to residents who show their Hackney Recycling Rewards Card.

Don’t live in Hackney and feel as though you are missing out? Well obviously it’s always important to recycle but if you are after something back, the following boroughs are also running similar schemes (Hammersmith & Fulham, Havering, Greenwich, Sutton, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, Waltham Forest, Camden and Bexley), so check them out to find out whether you could be saving the planet and saving money at the same time.
