UCL Festival of the Arts - Broke in London

UCL Festival of the Arts

Get a little taster of a top-class education for free!

It’s apparent, it’s becoming a taboo subject, a topic for debate, a controversial newspaper headline, but this May, UCL is once again offering the public the chance to experience a world-class education for free with the annual Free UCL Festival of the Arts.

From the 27th to 30th May, a number of high-profile academics and speakers will host free events, including Professor Juliet Mitchell, Dr Michael Stewart, Professor Mary Fulbrook and Professor Iwan Morgan.

Over 1000 people attended events in 2013, and this year UCL Festival of the Arts promises to be even bigger and better, with events ranging from walking tours of London’s silent cinemas, film screenings and exhibitions, to musical performances, lectures and show-and-tell sessions, to name but a few.

The aim of the festival is to engage the public in lively discussions and debate, enabling them to experience and learn from the research of UCL academics and to walk away having learnt something new about the arts.

Festival highlights:

‘Ronald Reagan Movie Star’ – This lecture given by the UCL Institute of America’s Professor Iwan Morgan will prompt festival-goers to question how they think of past President Ronald Reagan – as a politician? A limited actor out-starred by a chimp? Or something else?

Flickering, Lost, Forgotten: London’s Silent Picture Palaces – This walking tour will see Dr Chris O’Rourke take participants on a journey down London’s streets, back in time to the period between the 1890s and 1920s to discover the hidden and now forgotten silent cinemas which once amazed and entertained the capital’s cinema goers.

If you have a spare lunch hour why not book yourself in with an Appointment with Dante and see if an hour in his company will change your reading habits for a lifetime? Or join Geraldine Brodie in uncovering the workings of subtitling in live performance? Or how about a magic lantern show and live piano accompaniment with Dr Cristina Massaccesi and Nick Booth?

Whether your interest is in film, art, literature, philosophy, history or a chance to discover more about UCL and its collections, there truly is something for everyone. You can visit UCL’s website to find out more about the programme and follow @UCLFest_Of_Arts on Twitter for more updates
