38 Free Language Courses
By Joshua Neil
The world is getting smaller; we’re all coming a little closer together. Nowhere is this more true than in a city like London, where hundreds of cultures and languages come together to create something more than the sum of its parts. With cities like the capital becoming more and more diverse and home to more and more dialects, there has never been a better time to learn a new language. However, many feel that they lack the funds or the time to gain a skill that will always come in handy.
What is Livemocha?
Whether it’s down to time, money, or just pure laziness, there is a solution to all these problems that is simple, easy and- most importantly- totally free. This solution is Livemocha, an innovative and community-driven new website devoted to giving others free language courses.
How Do I Begin?
Livemocha allows users to register an account and immediately begin learning a new language- first by picking the one they want to learn, then starting out on a course that the ‘whole-part-whole’ system of watching and listening to native speakers in conversation, then by being taught the components and individual elements of the conversation and ideas that were just discussed, and then by being encouraged to attempt to repeat and utilise what they have learned. This extremely intuitive system makes learning easy and enjoyable, and with enough practice can be mastered by anyone.
There are over 35 different languages to be learned, taught by native speakers and with a huge range of exercises and activities to complete, all aided by the global community of professional teachers and guides. Beyond this, the site provides instructor-led classes for a real challenge, meaning that learning a language, wherever you are, has never been easier.
Finally, language-learners have the opportunity to give back to the community by helping others learn their native language, helping them with exercises or personally tutoring them. The Livemocha community dedicates itself to helping those who are struggling, or exchanging tips and knowledge so that everyone benefits.
Whether you are looking to learn a new language, or help others learn yours, Livemocha is a great way to involve yourself in the culture of others, and expand your horizons along with it. To keep up-to-date with all their latest information, follow their Twitter at @Livemocha.
